Having pains between your shoulder blades?

Lots of clients come in and say “I have pain in between my shoulder blades”.

One of the main reason for this pain is weakness in the area between the shoulder blades. Mostly due to rhomboid muscles. They become weak because of tight anterior muscles, like the Pectoral muscles, opposing the rhomboids. Pectoral muscles get shortened due to improper posture. Either from sitting in front of computer, slouching, and other activities that activates the anterior chain of the thoracic area.

As a therapist, first thing I look for when assessing pain between the shoulder blades is the lateral view of the client’s posture. Checking to see if they have rounded shoulders. Testing AROM and PROM for both Rhomboids and Pec muscles. Then assess the tonicity and health of pectoral muscle. Most of the time pec muscles are tighter which makes rhomboid muscles weak and causes pain.

Treatment for weak rhomboids is definitely activation and strengthening exercises, ie reverse dumbbell flys, and lateral prone raises. However, pectoral muscles need to be released in order for the rhomboids to be able to move properly within its normal range of motion.
